SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) offers flexible cancellation, refund, and ticket change policies, depending on the ticket type. Below is a complete guide on how to manage your bookings.

Refund Eligibility

Refunds depend on the ticket type and purchase conditions. Below are the main categories:

Supersaver Tickets

  • Non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
  • Cannot be changed after purchase.
  • If the train is canceled by SBB, passengers may be eligible for a refund or an alternative booking.

Regular (Standard) Tickets

  • Refundable before departure, with a possible cancellation fee.
  • Unused tickets can be refunded via the SBB online portal, app, or ticket counter.
  • Refund requests must be made before the ticket’s validity period expires.

Swiss Travel Pass and Regional Passes

  • Fully refundable before the first day of validity.
  • No refund after activation (once the first journey has started).
  • Regional passes may have specific refund policies.

Saver Day Pass

  • Non-refundable and non-changeable once purchased.
  • Exception: If the train is canceled, passengers may receive a full refund.

Half Fare Card & Monthly Passes

  • Refundable before activation.
  • Once activated, only partially refundable based on the remaining validity period.
  • Requires an official refund request via SBB Customer Service.

International Tickets (TGV, EuroCity, NightJet)

  • Cancellation policies vary by provider.
  • Some tickets allow refunds with a cancellation fee, while others are non-refundable.
  • Check the conditions in your booking confirmation.

How to Request a Refund

Refund requests can be made through:

Online Refund (For E-Tickets)

  • Log into your SBB account or SBB Mobile App.
  • Go to "My Tickets" → Select Ticket → Request Refund.
  • If eligible, refunds are processed within 5-10 business days.

Ticket Changes & Rebookings

Changes for Standard Tickets

  • Standard tickets can be exchanged for another date or route before departure.
  • If the new ticket is more expensive, the price difference must be paid.
  • No change fees apply for regular SBB tickets.

Changes for Supersaver and Saver Day Pass

  • Cannot be changed or modified.
  • A new ticket must be purchased if travel plans change.

Seat Reservations

  • Seat reservations are separate from train tickets.
  • Changes can be made for a CHF 5 fee before departure.
  • Not required for Swiss domestic travel but recommended for international routes.

Compensation for Delays and Cancellations

Passengers may be entitled to compensation in case of major delays or train cancellations.

Delay Refunds

  • 30–59 minutes delay: 25% compensation.
  • 60+ minutes delay: 50% compensation.
